Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park, yet it holds one of the most dramatic and unique landscapes in East Africa. Located in the far southwestern corner of the country, the park sits within the Virunga Mountain range, where Uganda meets Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This breathtaking region is defined by towering volcanic peaks, bamboo forests, and cool mountain air that creates a completely different atmosphere from the lowland savannah parks.

Gorilla trekking here takes you through bamboo forests and volcanic terrain, creating a unique experience that differs from the dense rainforest environment of Bwindi.

In addition to gorillas, Mgahinga is the only park in Uganda where you can track the endangered golden monkeys. These lively and playful primates move quickly through the bamboo forests, offering a completely different and energetic wildlife encounter. Watching them leap between branches and interact in large groups adds another layer of excitement to the park experience.

The cultural heritage of Mgahinga is equally significant. The park was once home to the Batwa people, who lived in the forest for generations as hunter-gatherers. Today, visitors can learn about their traditions, ancient survival skills, and deep spiritual connection to the forest through guided cultural experiences that bring their history to life.
